My yard previously was just mud and mulch, with a small patio and the whole thing prone to flooding. Additionally the previous "retaining wall" was just rocks stacked on top of each other and was not stable. Stix and Stones came in and redid the whole thing! They ripped out all the mud and mulch and previous patio. They laid down new pavers for the patio and leveled off the yard so that it drains better. Turf in the middle with a rock/gravel perimeter and they leveraged rocks deep in the ground to add depth to the yard. And lastly - the retaining wall they installed is super stable and I have no more fears of my neighbor's yard melting into mine! Brian was also super responsive and we worked together to find the best time for us to get the job done quickly with the right materials. After the install he still remains a great sounding board for ongoing maintenance and care. Thanks again to Stix and Stones !Posted on Anita SwitzerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Stix and Stones Landscaping created a wonderful retreat in my back yard. From concept to execution, everything went well. It's now a beautiful area with creative use of rocks, stairs, and a terrific water feature. I'm in the process of replanting with native low water use plants within a perfect framework.Posted on Scott HoefleTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. As a general contractor I've used these guys for several landscaping projects, especially paver projects. They have always done great work in a timely fashion for a fair price.
Flagstaff’s elevation and climate require plants that can tolerate freezing winters, intense sun, and relatively low moisture. Native and adaptive species tend to perform best, as they are already suited to the region’s soil and weather conditions. These plants also typically require less maintenance and watering once established.
Common choices include ponderosa pine, juniper, aspens, and spruce for trees, along with shrubs like Apache plume and serviceberry. Perennials such as penstemon, yarrow, and black-eyed Susan also thrive here. These selections provide seasonal color while maintaining resilience against frost and drought.
A well-designed plant palette also considers microclimates within your property, such as shaded areas, wind exposure, and drainage patterns. Choosing the right combination ensures long-term success, reduces replacement costs, and keeps your landscape looking healthy year-round.
Smaller residential projects—such as basic yard cleanups, planting, or simple installations—can often be completed within a few days. More involved projects that include grading, irrigation, or hardscaping elements like patios or retaining walls will naturally require more time to complete properly.
For larger, fully customized residential landscapes, timelines typically range from two to four weeks. Factors such as design complexity, material availability, weather conditions, and site accessibility all play a role in determining the overall schedule.
Because Flagstaff has a shorter construction season due to winter weather, proper planning is critical. Starting early and working with an experienced residential landscaping team helps ensure your project stays on schedule and is completed efficiently without sacrificing quality.
While we have the capability to handle both residential and commercial landscaping projects, our core focus is on residential properties. This allows us to provide a higher level of detail, customization, and hands-on service tailored to individual homeowners and their specific needs.
Residential landscaping requires a more personalized approach, from design aesthetics to functionality and long-term maintenance. We work closely with homeowners to create outdoor spaces that reflect their lifestyle, whether that includes entertaining areas, low-maintenance designs, or natural, native landscapes.
Commercial projects can be accommodated on a case-by-case basis, but our processes, team structure, and expertise are built around delivering exceptional residential outcomes. This focus ensures consistency, quality craftsmanship, and a better overall experience for homeowners.
Drainage is a critical component of any successful landscape, especially in Flagstaff where snowmelt and seasonal storms can create sudden water flow issues. We start by evaluating the property’s slope, soil composition, and natural runoff patterns to identify potential problem areas.
From there, we implement solutions such as proper grading, swales, French drains, and strategically placed hardscaping to direct water away from structures and usable spaces. These systems are designed to manage both everyday irrigation and heavier runoff events.
Incorporating drainage into the initial design phase ensures long-term durability and prevents costly repairs. A well-drained landscape not only protects your home and foundation but also helps maintain plant health and keeps your outdoor space functional throughout the year.
Many homeowners in Flagstaff choose to upgrade their existing landscapes rather than start from scratch. This can include adding new features like patios, fire pits, or updated plantings, as well as improving layout, functionality, or curb appeal.
The cost of upgrades depends on several factors, including the condition of the current landscape, the materials selected, and how extensive the changes are. Smaller enhancements may be relatively straightforward, while larger transformations can involve demolition, regrading, and new installations.
A professional assessment helps identify what can be preserved and what should be replaced to maximize value. While upgrades can sometimes cost more than expected, they often deliver significant improvements in usability, aesthetics, and long-term property value.
